Breast Cancer Recurrence Often Involves Extensive Tests

by Stephan Grindley

Breast cancer is an epidemic that kills millions of women worldwide each year. In addition to the pain and death that can ensue, breast cancer strikes at the heart of womanhood. When women have breast removal surgery in their efforts to remove the malignant tumors, a major and important part of what it is to be a woman is gone forever. This extreme step is required if breast cancer recurrence has occurred or is considered likely.

Breast cancer recurrence is far from being an anomaly. Cancer cells have a lasting and debilitating effect on the body cells' immunity. Consequently, even after one recuperates, the body cells remain vulnerable to recurring cancerous infection. Most of these recurrences are reported within three to five years after the initial medication date.

The most usual forms of cancer may be treated if they are diagnosed in their early stages. This is just as true of breast cancer. Early diagnosis will ensure that the right treatment is given to prevent the spread of malignancy and to avoid recurrence. Frequently, nuclear medicine is given along with strong antibiotics to rid the body of cancerous cells.

To avoid breast cancer recurrence, women need to be on the watch out for the same early signs that indicate breast cancer when it is first diagnosed. It is surprising but true that women, who have been diagnosed with breast cancer and treated once, fail to notice the same early signs after some time lapses. The result is recurrence of malignancy which is more damaging than the initial spread of infection.

If you find unusual hardening of fatty tissue in either breast, it's a reason for alarm. If this hardened tissue is found in the same breast which was previously given radiation treatment, it means breast cancer recurrence. In such a case, you must hurry and see the oncologist who had treated you in the past.

An oncologist may occasionally recommend after breast cancer has been diagnosed that you undergo a selection of tests in order to eliminate the possibility of recurrence of breast cancer. A mammogram and a physical examination by a gynecologist are frequently part of such tests.

Breast cancer is a serious disease which claims the lives of millions of women every year from all over the world. Women who must undergo a mastectomy in order to save their lives often feel traumatized as a feature of their femininity is lost. A breast cancer recurrence may necessitate removal of the breast, or adding in additional forms of therapy, such as radiation treatment. Whether by mammogram or not, early diagnosis not only ensures that proper treatment is given, but it also decrease the chances of the cancer spreading or recurring.
